Democratizing STEM experimentation with the LabsLand global network

Experimentation is key in every engineering and scientific field. Remote laboratories are software and hardware tools that enable students to experiment with real equipment through the Internet. Accessing real equipment remotely has many advantages, such as flexibility (in time and location), but the most important one is that it has the potential to drastically reduce costs through laboratory sharing among different institutions. By sharing labs, institutions also have access to more laboratories maintained by other universities. LabsLand is a startup that has created a global network of online laboratories, where schools and universities worldwide access real experiments performed in other universities on five continents.

How can data science assist decision-making in higher education?

Educational data science is an important branch of data science that aims to extract knowledge from various forms of massive educational data using statistical and machine learning methods. In this talk, I will talk about how data science methods can assist educational stakeholders by providing a better understanding of the big data stored in the educational administrative system. In this talk, I will present our research on identifying students at risk of dropping out, assessing the predictive validity of the admission system, identifying various factors of student success, the connection between student evaluation of teaching and grade inflation, moreover, I will also touch upon the applicability of explainable artificial intelligence tools in higher education.

Attend the launch of the IFE Living Lab & Data Hub at the 8th International Congress on Educational Innovation (CIIE) of the Institute for the Future of Education (IFE). During this virtual event, taking place from December 13th to 16th, 2021, we will present the data collections available for researchers and industry stakeholders at the IFE Data Hub and the Calls for Participation at the IFE Living Lab. We will have panels with experts discussing the relevance of Learning Analytics initiatives in Latinamerica and the applications of Educational Data Mining.
